Growing up with an uncle with quadriplegia, the importance of accessibility was instilled in me at an early age. Watching him use a screen reader, voice to text, and a joystick to maneuver a computer, I was amazed with the technology in the early 1990's that allowed him to continue his career as lawyer. I wanted to make sure to accommodate those around to have the same abilities as me.
As an educator, I made sure to adapt my lessons for students receiving special education services or are language learners. However, it was not until virtual teaching in 2020 that I truly understood 508 compliance with technology. It inspired me to start the 508 Accessibility Trusted Tester Certification, which I completed in July 2022. I want to make sure that my work is accessible to all.
